Styling thin hair can be tricky. If you want thick, luscious hair but have fine, limp hair, these tips help create the look of a thicker, fuller mane.

How do you style thin hair for more volume?

For thin hair, wash every other day with a volumizing shampoo and keep conditioner off your roots. A scrunch while you blow-dry and a little texturizing powder at the roots build the volume.

1. Wash more often

The minute your hair gets a little oily, it gets weighed down. Wash more often, but don't go overboard: washing too often can strip your hair and increase oil production. If you have fine hair, wash every other day and use a dry shampoo on the second day if needed. Start with a volumizing shampoo. It cleanses your hair without adding weight.

2. Condition the ends

Keep conditioner off your roots. If your hair needs it, apply conditioner from mid-length to the ends and avoid the scalp. Use it sparingly so it doesn't weigh your hair down.

3. Use a styling aid

Choose a styling aid with panthenol. Panthenol thickens each strand, adding shine and texture while reducing split ends. Look for a gel or foam made for fine hair with sage, nettle, rosemary and aloe to keep hair pliable and conditioned without adding weight.

4. Dry for volume

As you blow-dry, scrunch your hair with your hand until it's at least 60% dry, then finish styling with a brush. You can also blow-dry upside down, then part your hair on the opposite side.

5. Volumize your roots

Once your hair is dry, pump up the volume with a texturizing powder. Volumizing styling dust bonds to the hair so you can lift and move it wherever you want. Sprinkle a little in your hand or right on your roots for instant lift. For a fuller ponytail, sprinkle some on the ends and scrunch. The bottles are usually small enough to carry in your pocketbook for touch-ups.

6. Hold that style

Once you have the style you want, keep it in place with a quick spritz of hairspray.

7. Beat the second-day blues

Dry shampoo can be your best friend. It's a quick, easy way to get rid of unwanted oil. Look for a spray-on, residue-free version for easy application. Part your hair and spray at the roots, give it a few minutes to absorb the oil, finger-toss, then spray all over for extra volume. Powder versions work too, and if you're up for the challenge, you can make your own. Whichever you choose, your hair and scalp will feel clean and refreshed.
